The fruits have fleshy husks when depend on the husk splits into the two half along a ridge running the length of the fruit.

Description

Jatiphala or Jaiphal (Myristica fragrans) is a small aromatic evergreen tree growing up to a height of 5-13m. Jatiphala is an egg shaped seed from Myristica fragrans fruit.

The leaves of Jaiphal Plant are smooth dark green whose upper surface is shiny. They are about 7.5-8.8 cm long and alternately arranged.

Jaiphal flowers are small pale yellow in color and are usually single sexed.

Jaiphal fruit are small scented smooth and oval, shaped. They are brownish lustrous color. It is having hard covering whic encloses mace, the outer covering on th nutmeg seed (Jaiphal). When the fruit g ripened, it get bifurcated and reddish drie lacy covering of nutmeg is exposed. Th orange-yellow papery material the one th separates from the seed on drying is called Mace.

1. Nutmeg thrives well in warm humid conditions in locations with an annual rainfall of 150cm and more.

2. It grows well from sea level up to about 1300m above MSL. Areas with soils of clay loam, sandy loam, and red lateritic are ideal for its growth.

3. Both dry climate and water-logged conditions are not good for nutmeg.
