Sapota is a delicious calorie-rich fruit belonging to the category of fruits like mango. This fruit is better known as Chikoo in India. Sapota is a delicious tropical fruit that belongs to the Sapotaceae family that goes with the scientific name Manilkara zapota.

These fruits are elongated in shape, unlike the usual sapota. When fully ripe the inside color varies and the pulp is very sweet and tasty.

Sunlight – The young Sapota plant is likely to damage due to the high sunlight, dry and hot wind. Sapota can grow in both arid and humid environments. The fruit tree is tolerant of most conditions but prefers a sunny, warm, and frost free location .The Sapota trees grow well up to an altitude of 1000 m.

Water –Newly planted sapote trees should be watered at planting and every other day for the first week or so and then 1 to 2 times a week for the first couple of months. Irrigation is provided at an interval of 30 days in winter and 15 days in summer.

Soil type –The soils varieties suitable for Sapota cultivation are deep alluvium, sandy loam and medium black soil. The pH of the soil should be around 6 to 8. Shallow clay type of soil is not suitable for Sapota farming.

Fertilizer – Sapota plants need manure and fertilizers for healthy growth and development. These plants are fertilized twice a year in the months of June and January.
